GitHub says it has added 4 million CPU cores, 160 PB of high-speed storage and 50 Tb/s of network capacity so far this year. Microsoft's Jay Parikh gave the numbers around GitHub's Universe conference, and said GitHub is migrating to a multi-region deployment in Azure and expects to finish early next year.

The pressure comes from AI agents. GitHub's Octoverse report says more than 40% of pull requests started with an agent as of September, up from 17% in March. The Register reports that GitHub recorded 7.4 billion commits in September, five times the figure a year earlier, and that the surge has come with repeated outages this year.

"Adding capacity matters, but capacity alone won't get us there," Parikh wrote. GitHub is also rebuilding its Git architecture around three principles: "simplify the primitives, decouple storage from compute, and minimize coordination."
